What a super week we’ve had in Caterpillar Class! We’ve spent the week thinking about Remembrance Day and the significance of this. We’ve learned all about why we have Remembrance Day and why it is represented by the poppy. We made a class poppy wreath and some of us chose to paint egg box poppies in the Creative Area. We then used loose parts and play dough to make different poppies and we practised taking photos of these and uploading them ourselves to our own learning journals. We have quite a few aspiring photographers in our class!
This term we have introduced weekly challenges for the children to complete during their Busy Learning Time. Challenges are linked to different curriculum areas and may recap objectives previously covered in class. When children have completed a challenge they get it signed off in their ‘Challenge Passports’ and if children complete all challenges throughout the week they earn two Dojo points and a House point! This week we have had four challenges and we are building up to being able to complete five each week. ☺️👍🏻
In English we wrote sentences about what did on the weekend. Lots of children described playing with their toys at home, alongside baking and going for lovely Autumn walks. We really concentrated on spelling words in our word bank correctly and leaving clear finger spaces alongside accurate punctuation. We also learned the famous verse from the poem ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon and undertook some comprehension questions about the history of Remembrance Day.
Our sounds this week have been ‘ure ’ and ‘er.’ Our tricky word of the week was ‘they’ll and we also learned how to identify syllables within words. It is great to hear that children have been using Phonics Play at home to consolidate their learning. The details are below again in case you haven’t had a chance to log on yet. Our rehearsals for our song ‘Snowflakes’ are going well and we’ve even added some actions! This week we will attempt to sing and dance at the same time - wish us luck! 🤞🏻 We will be making snowflake headbands to wear and snowflakes to attach to our school jumpers so please don’t worry about sending any costumes in. The whole school are also learning ‘Let it Go’ and a modified version of ‘Hallelujah’, which we will be joining in on the choruses for!
In Maths we are working systematically to find all of the different number bonds for numbers within 10, so 0 + 5 = 5, 1 + 4 = 5, 2 + 3 = 5 etc. We have played Hit the Button to practise our number bonds to 10 and also danced along to Jack Hartmann on YouTube! Links to both are below:

In Science we have started our new topic on materials! The children were brilliant on our materials treasue hunt there they found lots of things around our classrom made of plastic, metal and wood, we also looked at what glass can look like. They have been working hard to identify materials in lots of different forms and next week we will be learning how to name objects and the materials they are made from.
We had a busy day on Friday celebrating Children in Need day, the children looked lovely in their ‘wear what you like clothes’ and we learned some of the reasons we collect money for the charity. We joined Joe Wicks live for the last workout of his 24 hour PE session, which was enjoyed by all!
In RE we continued to think about our key question for this half term is - What do Christians believe God is like? We read a parable from the bible – ‘The Prodigal Son’ and the children helped to act the story out. Next week we will talk further about what Christians believe the story teaches them about God and explore the theme of forgiveness.
